JJ Powell

JJ Powell is an accomplished international lawyer with primary training in corporate law and mergers and acquisitions. Educated at Eton College, he pursued literature at the University of Oxford before completing his legal studies at his alma mater.

Recognized for his expertise, Powell was recruited by Basham, Ringe y Correa in Mexico City, where he became a partner at just twenty-eight. His practice spans corporate, commercial, and real estate law, with over a decade of experience advising leading global luxury brands.

Following his tenure at Basham, Powell founded and expanded a boutique practice that evolved into The Powell Continental Group (PCG). Today, he serves as lead counsel and negotiator on PCG’s international M&A cases, including advising ExxonMobil on its acquisition of Pioneer Natural Resources. Under his leadership, PCG has become a trusted partner, with a team qualified to practice across industries and jurisdictions worldwide.

Beyond law, Powell is a Tony Award-winning theatre producer on Broadway and an active developer of plays and musicals for London’s West End. His multidisciplinary career reflects both legal precision and cultural vision. He is set to begin a remote doctorate in psychology at Johns Hopkins University in January 2026 and will receive his second master’s degree from Oxford in November 2025.

Powell is fluent in English, Spanish, and French, with intermediate proficiency in Italian. His work and cultural contributions have been featured in Legal 500, Chambers & Partners, Forbes, Rolling Stone, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar.
